Durante la época de corona y la creación del disco, hubo muchos chismes. Juegos de pensamiento y castillos de nubes, dice Ville Valo. En enero, las cosas se vuelven reales. Es entonces cuando sale el disco en solitario de Ville Valo, aka VV -el nombre del artista se abrevia en dos letras- y presenta su nueva banda en el club Tavastia de Helsinki.
"Es agradable ver cómo se mueve la carne. ¿Saltará la gente o no saltará?".
A veces cinco años parece una eternidad. El último concierto de HIM fue a principios de 2018, también en Tavastia. Los álbumes de HIM vendieron más de diez millones de copias en todo el mundo. Dark Light (2005) sigue siendo el único álbum de un artista finlandés que ha vendido oro en los Estados Unidos. Después del álbum Venus Doom (2007), el impulso comenzó a decaer.
Según Valo, los últimos años de HIM fueron de respiración artificial. La banda debería haberse separado antes.
"Tienes que confiar en tu intuición. Si no va, no va. Sí, lo intentamos, pero al final no hubo el mismo fuego e interés por el trabajo”.
Músicos de rock jóvenes y hambrientos se habían convertido en hombres de mediana edad. La banda ya no era el centro de la vida. El tipo de pandilla o hermandad que Valo hubiera deseado. Se había convertido en un trabajo.
Sin embargo, la mayoría de las cosas estaban bien. Fue agradable terminar la banda de tal manera que los músicos no se estrangularan unos a otros. Después del último concierto de HIM, Ville Valo no tenía planes.
"O tenía la pizza del Dr. Oetker en casa. Eso es todo."
Primero, Valo descansó. Luego "puso sus Legos en forma, cantó con los Agents e hizo un disco en solitario". Eso son los últimos cinco años en pocas palabras.
Valo había trabajado antes con el guitarrista Esa Pulliainen y su banda Agents. A fines de la década de 1990, Valo interpretó las canciones de Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki en el programa Laulava sydän. Los Agents sirvieron como banda de fondo del programa.
Con el álbum Ville Valo & Agents lanzado en abril de 2019, Valo volvió a interpretar Paratiisi e Ikkunaprinsessa. Además, cantó un par de sus otros temas favoritos de Badding, así como canciones que se encuentran en una vieja cinta demo.
Ese verano, Valo y Agents recorrieron escenarios provinciales así como los festivales más importantes.
"La gran carpa del festival Flow estaba completamente llena. El público cantó a todo pulmón. Mis 15 minutos como el héroe de ese grupo estaban claramente ahí", dice Valo.
"En Pori Jazz, la gente se puso de pie y aplaudió. Como si hubiera logrado infiltrarme en una escena musical cultural real".
2019 fue el último verano antes de la pandemia. Ville Valo y Agents estaban en movimiento en el momento justo. Cuando terminó el verano, Valo comenzó a concentrarse en hacer un álbum en solitario.
"Aprendí mucho de Esa. Esa hace música instrumental muy marginal por sí mismo. Fue una de las inspiraciones cuando comencé a escribir un disco en solitario".

Hiilikellari (Carbonera). Así se conoce a Esa Pulliainen en el estudio que Ville Valo tiene en su casa. Mientras grababa el disco, Valo pasó largos días en un espacio oscuro.
VV ha compuesto y escrito todas las canciones del álbum Neon Noir. Canta y toca todo lo que hay en el disco. También grabó su propia música. Había que aprender muchas cosas desde el principio.
"Tuve que comprar algunas herramientas y aprender a usar todo tipo de software. El dedo se me fue a la boca muchas veces. Youtube fue muy útil".
No hay compromisos en el álbum. Si a la gente no le gusta, ya sabes a quién culpar, dice.
En el álbum se completó una canción a la vez. No tenía plazo. Valo no le prometió a nadie que el disco estaría listo en ese momento. Pagó todo de su propio bolsillo. Era la forma más fácil de mantenerse independiente.
A Valo no le gusta hablar de dinero. Según él, extraña más el dinero cuando le recuerda a sí mismo.
"Sería bueno si todos tuvieran suficiente dinero para sobrevivir. Una pequeña base, para que puedas olvidarlo aunque sea por un momento. Por eso estoy a favor de la renta básica".
Hacer el álbum fue el salvavidas de Ville Valo durante el periodo de corona. Le permitió concentrarse en algo, olvidar la incertidumbre.
En sus días libres, Ville Valo se acostaba en el sofá y miraba series de terror en Netflix con su novia Christel Karhu. Valo dice que está cómodo en casa. Dice que es feliz en cualquier lugar. El mayor problema es que no se siente cómodo consigo mismo.
"Sigo pensando que nada está bien. Siempre hay una piedra en el zapato. Ahora que soy una persona tan mayor, por suerte me he dado cuenta de que la mayor parte del tiempo soy yo".
Valo no lleva el gorro negro familiar, sino una gorra plana negra. Tocado tradicional de los ancianos.
Valo tiene 46 años.
Valo se describe a sí mismo como un tonto emocional. Como un romántico. Como el rey del drama. Alguien de llanto fácil.
Cuando era niño, vio la película Pojat de Mikko Niskanen en la televisión. En su escena final, Vesa-Matti Loiri corre tras el tren que parte y llama a su madre. Según Valo, la escena lo afectó tan profundamente que lloró durante muchas horas y desarrolló fiebre alta. Su madre lo ropó y lo vigiló.
"Hablamos mucho en casa, pero tal vez no sobre sentimientos. ¿Era normal hablar de sentimientos entonces? Por supuesto, preguntaban si todo estaba bien y trataban de decir que sí si estaban de mal humor".
Con su padre, Ville Valo pintaba mucho con acuarelas. El padre pintaba gatos en folis y el hijo "algo abstracto".
La casa de la infancia de Valo tenía muchas cosas por todas partes. Todavía le parece raro entrar en un apartamento donde no haya discos ni libros.
"Es un poco como enamorarse de un hombre lagarto. Simplemente no es humano".
Ville Valo no presenta su propia casa (en Meilahti, Helsinki, 426 metros cuadrados, precio en 2014 aprox. 1,3 millones) en público. Valo está satisfecho de no tener que exponerse todo el tiempo — abriendo su guardarropa, participando en programas de televisión, navegando por Instagram.
"Lo veo como un activo. Puedo escabullirme del centro de atención cuando quiera”.
Valo admite que es agradable cuando la gente sabe y siente. Te dice que has tenido éxito en algo.
También provoca situaciones incómodas.
"Si voy a un concierto, un par de tipos extraños siempre vienen a preguntar por qué se separó HIM. Sin embargo, no me afecta de ninguna manera. Si ese tipo de cosas ya te molestan de antemano, siempre te puedes quedar en casa".
Las ideas que la gente tiene de él son fuertes. En ellas, Ville Valo sostiene un vaso o un cigarrillo. En realidad, Valo dejó de beber alcohol hace 15 años. Dejar de fumar fue más difícil. Ahora no ha fumado durante seis años.
"Soy mucho mejor cantante que un borracho. Por mucho que practicara bebiendo, no llegaría al mismo nivel", dice Valo.
"Algunos de nosotros hemos bebido. Para muchos es una parte importante en sus vidas. Algunos están bien con eso, y son capaces de hacer su trabajo. Algunos no lo logran".
Ville Valo cree que fumar se ve bien ("¡Dios mío, mira a James Dean!") y huele bien. Por otro lado, es asmático. Cuando Valo fumaba dos paquetes al día, sus pulmones estaban constantemente bloqueados.
"No tiene sentido hacer una carrera cada año y volar al otro lado del mundo para no estar bien. Solo pensé en Kurt Cobain y Mark Lanegan. ¿Qué tiene de bueno viajar por el mundo enganchado a la heroína?".
Cuando Ville Valo fuma, fuma en cadena. Cuando Valo bebió, bebió demasiado. Nadie vino a decir mírate en el espejo. Muchos dijeron que ahora hay buen humor.
Cuando HIM se estaba fortaleciendo, era fácil creer que las drogas eran una parte integral del sueño del rock.
"Y sí, son más parte de este trabajo que hacer clic en un iPhone en la trastienda. Eso se siente completamente mal".
"Cebras y rayas y así sucesivamente".
Valo hizo el álbum Neon Noir no solo por si mismo sino también para sí mismo. Para él, la música es como la respiración, necesaria para la existencia.
Ville Valo habla con entusiasmo sobre sus favoritos recientes y las influencias de su álbum en solitario, como The Chameleons, Cocteau Twins y This Mortal Coil. Todos ellos son favoritos de los geeks del pop, que aparecieron rápidamente en la música indie de la década de 1980.
"En algunas de las canciones del nuevo álbum, creo que hay bastante indie de guitarra de los 80. Los oyentes pueden pensar que el álbum es la misma mierda de siempre, pero para mí algunos de los saltos son realmente grandes".
Sería cursi llamar a Ville Valo una obra de arte completa, pero todo se trata de algo así. El símbolo del corazón que dibujó él mismo, el término exacto de love metal, los tatuajes de Timo K. Mukka y Charles Baudelaire, el vocabulario romántico de las canciones y la ropa negra están estrechamente entrelazados. Es imposible deshacerse de ellos.
La música tiene todo lo que es Ville Valo. O al menos lo que quiere hacer público un artista que cuida su privacidad.
“A través de la música interpreto mis experiencias de la infancia y trato de entender este mundo”, dice Valo.
"Es un gran problema, pero no trae pan a la mesa. La música también debe tener oyentes que estén dispuestos a pagar por ello. Entiendo muy bien que es un premio de lotería..."
El pensamiento de Valo se rompe. Ya no puede volver a él.
"Por cierto, durante la corona gané mil euros en la lotería. Estaba muy sorprendido. Incluso en estado de shock.
Desde el comienzo de HIM, ha sido importante para Ville Valo hacer todo como él quiere. Valo dice que aprendió su carácter absoluto de Neil Young e Ismo Alanko.
"La discusión es agradable, pero soy bastante inflexible y un jodido compañero de trabajo".
En futuros conciertos, VV y su banda interpretarán canciones del nuevo álbum y canciones de HIM a partes iguales. El guitarrista Mikko Virta y el bajista Juho Vehmanen han tocado en PMMP y en la banda de acompañamiento de Vesala, entre otros. El baterista Risto Rikala ha tocado en las bandas de Jenni Vartiainen y Ellinoora, mientras que el otro guitarrista Sampo Sundström ha tocado con Sanni.
Rikala y Sundström también han estado involucrados en la orquesta del programa Vain Elämää.

During the corona time and the creation of the record, there was a lot of gossip. Thought games and cloud castles, says Ville Valo. In January, things get real. That's when Ville Valo's solo album comes out, aka VV -the artist's name is abbreviated to two letters- and presents his new band at the Tavastia club in Helsinki.
"It's nice to see the flesh move. Will people jump or not jump?"
Sometimes five years seems like an eternity. HIM's last concert was in early 2018, also in Tavastia. HIM's albums have sold more than ten million copies worldwide. Dark Light (2005) remains the only album by a Finnish artist to have sold gold in the United States. After the album Venus Doom (2007), the momentum began to wane.
According to Valo, the last years of HIM were of artificial respiration. The band should have broken up earlier.
"You have to trust your intuition. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Yes, we tried, but in the end there wasn't the same fire and interest in the work."
Hungry young rock musicians had become middle-aged men. The band was no longer the center of life. The kind of gang or brotherhood Valo would have wanted. It had become a job.
However, most things were fine. It was nice to end the band in such a way that the musicians didn't strangle each other. After HIM's last concert, Ville Valo had no plans.
"Or had Dr. Oetker's pizza at home. That's all."
First, Valo rested. Then he "got his Legos in shape, sang with the Agents and made a solo record." That's the last five years in a nutshell.
Valo had previously worked with guitarist Esa Pulliainen and his band The Agents. In the late 1990s, Valo performed Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki's songs on the show Laulava sydän. The Agents served as the show's background band.
With the album Ville Valo & Agents released in April 2019, Valo once again performed Paratiisi and Ikkunaprinsessa. Plus, he sang a couple of his other favorite Badding songs, as well as songs found on an old demo tape.
That summer, Valo and Agents toured provincial stages as well as major festivals.
"The big top at the Flow festival was completely packed. The audience sang at the top of their lungs. My 15 minutes as the hero of that group were clearly there," says Valo.
"At Pori Jazz, people stood up and applauded. As if I had managed to infiltrate a real cultural music scene."
2019 was the last summer before the pandemic. Ville Valo and Agents were on the move at just the right time. As the summer ended, Valo began to focus on making a solo album.
"I learned a lot from Esa. Esa makes very fringe instrumental music by itself. He was one of the inspirations when I started writing a solo record."

On the album one song was completed at a time. I had no deadline. Valo did not promise anyone that the record would be ready at that time. He paid for everything out of his own pocket. It was the easiest way to stay independent.
Valo doesn't like to talk about money. According to him, he misses money more when it reminds him of himself.
"It would be nice if everyone had enough money to survive. A small base, so you can forget about it even for a moment. That's why I'm in favor of basic income."
Making the album was Ville Valo's lifeline during the corona period. He allowed her to focus on something, forget the uncertainty.
On his days off, Ville Valo would lie on the couch and watch horror shows on Netflix with his girlfriend Christel Karhu. Valo says that he is comfortable at home. He says that he is happy anywhere. The biggest problem is that he is not comfortable with himself.
"I still think that nothing is right. There is always a stone in my shoe. Now that I am such an old person, luckily I have realized that most of the time it is me."
Valo is not wearing the familiar black beanie, but instead a black flat cap. Traditional headdress of the elderly.
Valo is 46 years old.
Valo describes himself as an emotional fool. Like a romantic. Like the drama king. Someone easy to cry.
When he was a child, he watched Mikko Niskanen's film Pojat on television. In her final scene, Vesa-Matti Loiri runs after the departing train and calls for his mother. According to Valo, the scene affected him so deeply that he cried for many hours and developed a high fever. His mother clothed him and watched over him.
"We talked a lot at home, but maybe not about feelings. Was it normal to talk about feelings then? Of course, they would ask if everything was okay and try to say yes if they were in a bad mood."
With his father, Ville Valo painted a lot with watercolors. His father painted cats on paper and his son "something abstract."
Valo's childhood home had a lot of things everywhere. It still seems strange to him to enter an apartment where there are no records or books.
"It's a bit like falling in love with a lizardman. He's just not human."
Ville Valo does not present his own house (in Meilahti, Helsinki, 426 square meters, price in 2014 approx. 1.3 million) in public. Valo is glad she doesn't have to put herself out there all the time — opening his wardrobe, appearing on TV shows, browsing Instagram.
"I see him as an asset. I can slip out of the spotlight whenever I want."
Valo admits that it's nice when people know and feel. He tells you that you have succeeded in something.
It also causes awkward situations.
"If I go to a concert, a couple of weird guys always come over to ask why HIM broke up. It doesn't affect me in any way though. If that kind of thing already bothers you beforehand, you can always stay home." .
The ideas that people have of him are strong. In them, Ville Valo holds a glass or a cigarette. Actually, Valo stopped drinking alcohol 15 years ago. Quitting smoking was more difficult. He now he has not smoked for six years.
"I'm a much better singer than a drunk. As much as I practiced drinking, I wouldn't get to the same level," says Valo.
"Some of us have been drinking. For many it is an important part of their lives. Some are fine with it, and are able to do their job. Some are not."
Ville Valo thinks that smoking looks good ("My God, look at James Dean!") and smells good. On the other hand, he is asthmatic. When Valo smoked 2 packs a day, his lungs were constantly blocked.
"It doesn't make sense to do a race every year and fly to the other side of the world to not be well. I only thought of Kurt Cobain and Mark Lanegan. What good is traveling the world hooked on heroin?"
When Ville Valo smokes, he chain smokes. When Valo drank, he drank too much. No one came to say look in the mirror. Many said that now there is a good mood.
When HIM was going strong, it was easy to believe that drugs were an integral part of the rock dream.
"And yes, they are more a part of this job than clicking an iPhone in the back room. That just feels completely wrong."
"Zebras and stripes and so on."
Valo made the Neon Noir album not only by himself but also for himself. For him, music is like breathing, necessary for existence.
Ville Valo gushes about recent favorites of his and influences from his solo album, like The Chameleons, Cocteau Twins, and This Mortal Coil. All of them are favorites of pop geeks, who quickly appeared in the indie music of the 1980s.
"On some of the songs on the new album, I think there's quite a bit of '80s guitar indie. Listeners may think the album is the same old crap, but to me some of the jumps are really big."
It would be corny to call Ville Valo a complete work of art, but it's all about something like that. The heart symbol that he drew himself, the exact term for love metal, the tattoos of Timo K. Mukka and Charles Baudelaire, the romantic vocabulary of songs and black clothing are closely intertwined. It is impossible to get rid of them.
Music has everything that is Ville Valo. Or at least what an artist who takes care of his privacy wants to make public.
“Through music I interpret my childhood experiences and try to understand this world,” says Valo.
"It's a big deal, but it doesn't bring bread to the table. Music also has to have listeners who are willing to pay for it. I fully understand that it's a lottery prize..."
Valo's thought breaks. He can no longer go back to it.
"By the way, during corona I won a thousand euros in the lottery. I was very surprised. Even in shock."
Since the beginning of HIM, it has been important to Ville Valo to do everything the way he wants. Valo says that he learned his absolute character from Neil Young and Ismo Alanko.
"Argument is nice, but I'm pretty inflexible and a fucking coworker."
At future concerts, VV and his band will perform equal parts songs from the new album and HIM songs. Guitarist Mikko Virta and bassist Juho Vehmanen have played in PMMP and Vesala's backing band, among others. Drummer Risto Rikala has played in Jenni Vartiainen's and Ellinoora's bands, while the other guitarist Sampo Sundström has played with Sanni.
Rikala and Sundström have also been involved in the orchestra of the Vain Elämää program.
In Valo's mind, the Neon Noir record is a continuation of the past. Or a springboard into the future.
"There's no full circle here. I have no reason for that. I still sign everything I did before. It's an asset and not a liability."
Ville Valo says that he loves and is afraid to act. Similar experiences cannot be found anywhere else. On the other hand, sometimes Valo has a hard time concentrating. He is unable to forget himself in music, but he begins to think about inconsequential things.
Why aren't those lights working? Do you want to go to the bathroom? Something like that is suddenly disturbing and uncomfortable."
