Viví a principios de la década de 2000, en la era de los CD, iPod y videos musicales. Las canciones Join Me, Funeral Of Hearts, Killing Loneliness y Wings Of A Butterfly llenaron la divertidamente pequeña memoria de mi reproductor de mp3. Las mismas canciones suenan constantemente en el canal Music Television, en la clase de música de la escuela y en las radios de los autobuses en Lahti. El logotipo de Heartagram apareció en camisetas y carteles, así como en la conocida portada del álbum, donde el cantante tatuado posa sobre un fondo rosa con un cigarrillo en la boca. La banda era HIM, y su cantante se llamaba Ville Valo.
Ahora el mismo hombre aparece en la estación de trenes de Helsinki con un suéter de lana negro y zapatillas negras, usando el familiar sombrero negro de las fotografías.
- Encantado de conocerte, dice. El 13 de enero se lanzará el disco en solitario Neon Noir, que Valo (45) ha tocado y grabado íntegramente en solitario. YIN Y YANG
Valo se retiró al estudio de su casa en el otoño de 2019, justo después de su gira como solista de la banda Agents. HIM ya se había disuelto en 2017 y armar una nueva banda no se sentía bien. Cuando comenzó la pandemia de corona, hacerlo solo también se convirtió en la única opción, y en un medio de supervivencia.
- Yo, como todo el mundo, perdí toda fe en el mañana. Hacer música de alguna manera me mantuvo a flote y me dio una razón para levantarme.
La dimensión escapista siempre ha estado en el centro de la música de Valo, así como la combinación de opuestos y oscilaciones en la frontera entre la oscuridad y la belleza. Diferentes realidades se encuentran ya en el nombre del álbum Neon Noir, cuyas palabras contrastantes me recuerdan el álbum lanzado en 2003 y el concepto que HIM usó para describir todo su estilo musical: Love Metal. La misma filosofía se plasma en el logo de Heartagram dibujado por Valo cuando tenía 20 años.
Puedes llorar con las canciones de Valo, pero también puedes reír. Es emocionante ver videos de conciertos en YouTube, donde la audiencia de miles de personas en el festival Rock am Ring o el Teatro Orpheum en Los Ángeles gritan "Esta vida no vale la pena".
Enfrentarse a la penumbra y jugar con ella es divertido y liberador.
Siempre me ha gustado el pensamiento de Yin y Yang y el significado de "bailar con lágrimas en los ojos". Esa es la creación de todo ese disco, oscuridad parpadeante. El aburrimiento no necesita ser barrido debajo de la alfombra, pero puede ser recibido con los brazos abiertos. No significa romantizar la depresión, no se trata de eso. Pero es común para nosotros los humanos que todos vayamos de una forma u otra en la dirección equivocada. También se puede celebrar. En el nombre Neon Noir, a Valo también le atrae el hecho de que las palabras son universales. Al mismo tiempo, por supuesto, el nombre hace referencia al género cinematográfico neo-noir, representado por ejemplo por el clásico Blade Runner de los años 80. El álbum se lanzará como un doble vinilo, la primera mitad del cual, según Valo, tiene "todas las canciones de rock" y la segunda mitad tiene "Domingo por la mañana". El pasado de HIM se puede escuchar con fuerza en el álbum, pero un poco más ligero y más aerodinámico en una versión actualizada. Se han buscado influencias, por ejemplo, del shoegaze rock y del género new wave. - Lo bueno de la música es que las cosas aparecen en el disco sin saber de dónde ni por qué vienen. Los nombres de versos o canciones reales no tienen que estar relacionados con el significado literal de las palabras, sino con cómo suenan juntas y qué tipo de impresión general crean. También le gusta mezclar la sección "50's I love you teddy bear" con un texto más profundo. EN LA OSCURIDAD DE LA BODEGA DE CARBÓN El exterior de Ville Valo transmite una apreciación de los todos y una especie de misticismo. Tiene un toque de estilo del viejo mundo, un desapego del tiempo y el lugar al estilo de Rauli Badding. No usa las redes sociales y tampoco habla sobre su vida privada en las entrevistas. Es difícil imaginarlo en la mesa de Vain Elämää. I lived in the early 2000s, in the era of CDs, iPods, and music videos. The songs Join Me, Funeral Of Hearts, Killing Loneliness and Wings Of A Butterfly filled the amusingly small memory of my mp3 player. The same songs are played constantly on the Music Television channel, in the school music class and on the bus radios in Lahti. The Heartagram logo appeared on T-shirts and posters, as well as on the well-known album cover, where the tattooed singer poses against a pink background with a cigarette in his mouth. The band was HIM, and their singer was called Ville Valo.
Now the same man appears at the Helsinki train station in a black wool sweater and black sneakers, wearing the familiar black hat from the photographs.
-Nice to meet you, he says. On January 13, the solo album Neon Noir will be released, which Valo (45) has played and recorded entirely alone. Tim Palmer, who previously also produced and mixed HIM records, is responsible for mixing. Helsinki club Tavastia's Neon Noir world tour will also kick off on the day of the release, and is set to continue until the end of the year. Valo uses the name VV in connection with the solo album and tour.
- The idea of doing it solo was pretty arbitrary, says Valo. - Before this, though, I wasn't much of a recording artist, so I learned a lot from picking drum mics and mixing and other basic stuff... In that sense, I was naughty with myself, which is also pretty healthy. It is good to be alert.
YIN AND YANG
Valo retreated to his home studio in the fall of 2019, right after his solo tour for the band Agents. HIM had already disbanded in 2017 and putting together a new band didn't feel right. When the corona pandemic started, going it alone also became the only option, and a means of survival.
- I, like everyone else, have lost all faith in tomorrow. Making music somehow kept me afloat and gave me a reason to get up.
The escapist dimension has always been at the center of Valo's music, as well as the combination of opposites and oscillations on the border between darkness and beauty. Different realities are already found in the name of the album Neon Noir, whose contrasting words remind me of the album released in 2003 and the concept that HIM used to describe the whole musical style of it: Love Metal. The same philosophy is embodied in the Heartagram logo drawn by Valo when he was 20 years old.
You can cry with Valo's songs, but you can also laugh. It is exciting to watch concert videos on YouTube, where the audience of thousands of people at the Rock am Ring festival or the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles shout "This life is not worth living."
Facing the gloom and playing with it is fun and liberating.
I have always liked the thought of Yin and Yang and the meaning of "dancing with tears in your eyes". That's the making of that whole drive, flickering darkness. Boredom doesn't need to be swept under the rug, but it can be welcomed with open arms. It doesn't mean romanticizing depression, that's not what it's about. But it is common for us humans that we all go in one way or another in the wrong direction. It can also be celebrated.
In the name Neon Noir, Valo is also drawn to the fact that words are universal. At the same time, of course, the name refers to the neo-noir film genre, represented for example by the 1980s classic Blade Runner.
The album will be released as a double vinyl, the first half of which, according to Valo, has "every rock song" and the second half has "Sunday Morning". HIM's past can be heard strongly on the album, but a bit lighter and more streamlined in an updated version. Influences have been sought, for example, from shoegaze rock and the new wave genre.
- The good thing about music is that things appear on the record without knowing where or why they come from. Something just sounds right. I can be hopeful about what the new song will be like, but it usually changes completely along the way. The hardest rock idioms can become the most beautiful dictionaries. At the same time, it is an expression through one's own musical history and fetishes. This record features '80s new wave and Duran Duran, all those synths and stuff.
The search for the right feeling and confident intuition are also present in the lyrics. The names of actual verses or songs don't have to be related to the literal meaning of the words, but rather how they sound together and what kind of overall impression they create. He also likes to mix up the "50's I love you teddy bear" section with more in-depth text.
IN THE DARKNESS OF THE COAL CELLAR
Ville Valo's exterior conveys an appreciation of the all and a kind of mysticism. It has a touch of old world flair, a Rauli Badding-esque detachment from time and place. He does not use social networks and does not talk about his private life in interviews either. It's hard to imagine him at Vain Elämää's table. Instead, he's fluent about album track order, vinyl record color, and the "childish stamps" that gave the back cover a certain typeface.
I like that a whole world is offered instead of trying to bring the listener closer to everyday reality. Such a section of Tolkien was represented by Iron Maiden in my childhood, as was Ismo Alanko or, for example, J. Karjalainen. His stories have a strong world of their own, in which the listener can become a guest. Album covers are a big part of that world, they've always been important to me.
Working alone in the home studio, which Valo calls a "coal cellar," made it possible to do experiments that other people wouldn't have bothered with money or time. Many arranging and production majors were dropped, but plenty remained as well. For example, the closing track Vertigo Eyes ends in a loop that repeats the chorus for a long time, which slowly echoes and distorts to create an impression reminiscent of a fever.
In the streaming age, entities like albums often don't get their fair share. Valo would say that in the midst of an ephemeral culture lacking in abundance, people would have the patience to go through the works.
- Previously, we focused on one record or one movie at a time. There was less supply, so individual items had to be taken apart. I remember how Iron Maiden's Live After Death video cost 250 marks, so when I bought it, it was heavily hyped and everyone was hooked. It seems that nowadays people do not spend time in the same way.
It's hard to find good music when there's so much on offer.

-If you've seen the Swedish vampire movie Let The Right One In, you know what Oulunkylä was like in the 1980s. All the houses and streets are exactly the same.
The film in question, originally titled Låt den rätte komma in, takes place in Stockholm, in the Blackeberg neighborhood, in 1982.
- I am quite homesick for Ogeli (=Oulunkylä). It is one of those places where you remember all the roads and how the roots of the trees come out from under the ground... Everything happened there for the first time, the first trips to school and the wine and the gnashing of teeth, the life itself. Ogeli has always been my home.
Valo took bass lessons at the Oulunkylä Pop & Jazz music school. Alexi Laiho, Marko Hietala, Yona, Maija Vilkkumaa and Timo Kotipelto have also passed through the doors of the same school.
A chapter in Finnish music history began to be written when Valo met Mikko "Mige" Paananen and Mikko "Linde" Lindström at school, who later became HIM's bassist and guitarist. Especially in the first few years, the other band members changed a lot, but Valo, Mige and Linde stayed until the end.
- We started very young. Then Mige retired and the thing came to a complete halt for a year. When Mige returned, I began to feel that something had to be done now. That's when we started again in earnest.
Film director David Lynch changed many lives in the 1990s with his Twin Peaks series, and he was also involved in the HIM story. Valo had seen Lynch's Wild At Heart, the soundtrack for which was Chris Isaak's ballad Wicked Game. Valo searched Pasila's library for the album, and the song's adapted cover art turned out to be the key to the recording contract.
By the way, Lynch's influences can also be seen in the music video for the single Loveletting released last year, where the artist wanders through a dark mountainous landscape reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings and spends the night with a sheep.
Did Ville Valo have more options besides music?
- No. When I was still living at home, I went to jam with Suho Superstar's band Jimsonweed. Suho was my mentor and encouraged me to invest in my own band. Investing in music was made possible by the fact that my father helped me with the first rentals. The other HIM members got to work, but I was able to focus on the art. In fact, I have paid the arrears to my father.
THE NEXT ROCK'N'ROLL
At the turn of the millennium, the stars were in the right position in terms of Finnish music exports. In a few years, many bands tried to go abroad, dressed in black, combined distorted minor key guitar riffs with radio refrains and achieved worldwide popularity: Nightwish, The Rasmus, Children Of Bodom, Apocalyptica... And HIM, whose single Join Me ended up in the sci-fi film The Thirteenth Floor and led the way to Central Europe.
-We had some bad luck with the song "Join Me". In Germany, we were kind of a teen pop sensation and all of a sudden we ended up in the completely wrong kind of opportunities. However, we were rockers.
The years 1999-2006 were spent "in interviews" and "all the time on the plane." The real peak of mass popularity was perhaps reached with the album Dark Light (2005). With that, HIM became the first Finnish group to receive a gold record in the United States. Heartagram ended up on club walls in London and New York, and with his skater friend Bam Margera, also on Adio's skate shoes.
- The most important years for me were those of the Love Metal album, says Valo.
- It's still our most important record for me. I'm not saying it's necessarily the best record, but it's our bible in a way. On the previous records, we were still looking for our style. On the other hand, that pursuit has its merits, and early albums often have a sincerity you can't get back later.
The 2010s were a difficult time for rock bands. Electronic and realistic sounds took the place of the band's electric guitar and organic music, and it seemed that the word "rock" meant, at least for young people, mainly Nirvana and Metallica T-shirts from H&M. In recent years, however, the electric guitar and rock'n'roll have made a comeback.
- Things go in cycles. It's good not to get too much at once. I still miss a rebellious band like Apulanta, whose style and appearance wouldn't be too thought out. I guess the next Sid Vicious will come from the world of jazz. I have a strong feeling about this. A guy who improvises like Charlie Parker and flashes a little middle finger, that could be the next rock'n'roll. People would go crazy.
Valo reminds us that he hasn't thought about what he's done in terms of commercial success or tried to write music that would sell or be liked by others.
-If a person does what he loves, any sale after that doesn't matter, he sums it up.
Referring to the Neon Noir album and the upcoming tour, he says you have to be a "humble guy" and "see how interested people are."
Talk of humility and the insignificance of sales figures can easily sound hypocritical. However, in Valo's case, it seems like a genuine and natural way of approaching things. He exudes a courteous and surprisingly sincere presence. When he's sitting at the coffee table drinking Jaffa, I forget there's a guy I saw on MTV when he was a teen who has sold over ten million records.
IN A NEW BAND
In addition to Valo himself, the Neon Noir tour will be accompanied by a quartet: Mikko Virta (guitar), Risto Rikala (drums), Sampo Sundström (guitar) and Juho Vehmanen (bass). The opening act is Kælan Mikla, a three-woman synth punk trio from Iceland.
In addition to songs from the solo album, VV's set list also includes HIM songs. However, the purpose was not to put together a new HIM, but rather to look for a new style and approach.
- There is only one Mige and one Linde. It would be vulgar to repeat the old style and replace the musicians with some cheap copies. Now the touring band has a bit more of U2... On the other hand, there are also things that shouldn't be changed, like the piano pattern of the song Join Me. It can not be changed.
Valo did not know any of the band members from the tour before.
- This is a new situation insofar as previously the band has been like a family business, whose members I've known since I was a child. But it feels good to be here. I try to be the benevolent dictator of the gang.
As for the spring, the tour covers Europe and the United States, and at the time of writing, for example, Prague, Berlin, Vienna, Manchester and Los Angeles are sold out. There are festivals planned in the summer and hopefully more touring in the fall.
HIM has toured the world several times, and Ville Valo is synonymous with charisma for many. But does Valo like acting?
- Sometimes. I have learned to like it. But acting has always been difficult, that difficulty has been related to a certain tension and uncertainty. It's hard to forget yourself for a moment. I'm not one to jump on tables, like some exhibitionists. I'm quite an introvert, but on the other hand, it unites many artists. Going solo for Agents changed Valo's relationship with acting.
- With Agents, I learned to like it more. It was great playing with completely different guys and completely different music. It was an important lesson.
GIVING EVERYTHING
Valo releases a solo album through his own record company, for which he or that there has been a lot of background work involved, which is not visible from the outside.
Are you excited by the reception of the album and the reactions of the people? How closely do you follow, for example, comment fields on the Internet?
- I'm bad with comment sections, I don't know how to filter them. It feels like they are all love or all hate and nothing in between. But, of course, the reception is exciting, especially now that I am the only one responsible for everything. I have treated each song as if it were the last and now it is in the hands of the public if they like it and if they hit the right time.
Valo can't say how his career will continue next year. He plans to make the most of the upcoming tour and take it one thing at a time.
- I don't have any more songs, I've given everything for this album. But the songs always come from there, after a while. That is the routine. Creating and performing music are very different things.
I don't know if my last question is stupid, but I'll ask it anyway. Rock star. What does Ville Valo think of this word?
- They probably don't exist anymore. They often have a bit of a Napoleon complex, he says and laughs.
-If Neil Young or Ismo Alanko are rock stars, that's fine... It's also related to culture, I feel that in Finland stardom has to be hidden somehow, while in other places it's a good thing. I'm a bit in purgatory as to whether stardom is a good thing or a bad thing.
However, the ultimate reasons for making and listening to music for Valo lie in places other than stardom.
- A typical feeling for me is that of not belonging. I often feel like I don't belong here at all, and I think everyone can relate to this. Everyone wants to be understood. If someone can express something universally and in a way that others can understand, it's great to be a part of it. That is the best of music, it creates internal moments of union. And if the music succeeds in that, then it doesn't matter if the performer is a star or not.
