Ville Valo lanza su primer álbum en solitario. La información fue publicada en la primavera de este año y ya de por sí era una noticia. El asunto interesaba a las masas simplemente por el glorioso pasado de Ville con HIM.
Sin embargo, también era una noticia que se esperaba. Al mismo tiempo, un cierto misterio y la niebla del misticismo habían rodeado a todo el proyecto.
Ya en el 20 de marzo de 2020, el álbum EP Gothica Fennica Vol. 1, y aquí se reveló que Valo ahora estaba usando el nombre del artista VV. Gothica Fennica contenía tres canciones y fue lanzado únicamente en versión digital. En ese momento, la información sobre su publicación o una posible continuación era casi inexistente.
Este año llegaron a nuestra realidad los sencillos Loveletting, Echolocate Your Love y The Foreverlost. A principios del 2023 está prometido el lanzamiento del esperado larga duración Neon Noir, que tendrá 12 canciones entre las que se incluyen las 6 ya mencionadas canciones de VV.
Los radiadores se enfriaron
Antes de profundizar en el proyecto VV tenemos que hablar de la anterior banda de Valo, activa en los años 1995 - 2017 y llamada HIM. La necesidad más convincente de lidiar con el asunto surge del punto de partida artístico.
Neon Noir es un trabajo completo, contagioso y propio, pero no hay confusión sobre quién lo ha hecho. El álbum es reconocible por el sonido " a lo Ville Valo" lo que facilita al oyente mantener un seguimiento de la producción de HIM.
Entonces, ¿por qué escuchamos música creada bajo el nombre de VV? ¿No podría HIM haber hecho todo esto?
Valo, sentado en el vestíbulo de un hotel en Helsinki, no toca la pregunta, pero nos recuerda que hacer música es más que el resultado final. La relación entre los músicos y las condiciones circundantes tiene mucha influencia. Por ejemplo, estar en una banda debe ser divertido y fructífero.
- En algún punto, todos los miembros se cansaron de hacerlo. No fue realmente más dramático, explica Valo.
- Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger se convirtió en el baterá en sustitución de Mika "Gas" Karppinen, (1999-2015). Nos dio mucha energía, pero al final no la suficiente. Por supuesto, no culpo a Kosmo, pero simplemente no teníamos la pasión necesaria.
La banda trató de hacer material nuevo tras Tears on Tape (2013), pero no había suficiente fuego.
- Nadie estaba simplemente entusiasmado con los nuevos proyectos, ypor lo que entonces es mejor no hacerlo. También le preguntamos a nuestro manager, el fallecido Seppo Vesterinen [1948-2020], si deberíamos ir de gira y luego mirar las cosas nuevamente. Dijo que ya nadie quería vernos. Valo nos recuerda los puntos de partida de HIM.
- Nosotros, los verdaderos fundadores de la banda, yo, Linde [Mikko Lindström, guitarrista] y Mige [Mikko Paananen, bajista] éramos amigos de la infancia que nos conocimos cuando teníamos 12-13 años, descubrimos Black Sabbath juntos y aprendimos a tocar juntos. Una razón para vivir
Después de la gira de despedida de HIM en 2017, el siguiente resultado más visible de Valo fue una colaboración con los legendarios Agents. Las semillas del proyecto ya se habían sembrado en 1999 en el programa musical Laulava Sydän presentado por Agents. Esta vez, el fruto de la colaboración fue el álbum Ville Valo & Agents lanzado en febrero de 2019 y la gira de festivales bien recibida que siguió en el verano.

- Quería seguir moviéndome. Sin embargo, no tenía ningún deseo de comenzar a construir una nueva banda después de todo ese período de la familia HIM.
- Siempre me ha interesado grabar y un poco todo lo relacionado con hacer un disco. De alguna manera fue natural y seguro tratar de ver si podía hacer todo de manera completamente independiente.
Vale la pena tener en cuenta que Valo compuso, escribió, grabó, tocó y cantó Neon Noir solo en el estudio de su casa, el cual construyó después de HIM.
- Por supuesto, he estado haciendo muchos discos, pero esta era una situación completamente nueva. Hay muchos trucos nuevos para un perro viejo al presionar el botón de grabación tu mismo o verificar que todas las piezas estén en los lugares correctos y que todo funcione.
Todo grabador doméstico y músico que usa el portátil sabe que con la ayuda de los diversos programas de estudio de hoy en día, puedes hacer música tú mismo y hacer que suene remotamente como una banda de rock completa. Sin embargo, otra cosa es que el resultado final cumpla con todos los requisitos posibles de nivel profesional, y mucho menos con las expectativas artísticas.
- Lo más interesante fue la creación de mundos musicales. Hice ese disco para demostrarme a mí mismo que podía hacerlo. Y además de eso, el álbum contiene canciones que resuenan con mi propio estado de ánimo. Fue como un rito de iniciación.
- Al hacer estas canciones y un álbum completo, me doy una excusa para existir. Puede que sea demasiado elevado decir que hacer música es mi trabajo en el mundo, pero en cualquier caso, he dejado mi huella aquí. Neon Noir es otro pilar más para marcar eso. La canción se mantiene.
- En cierto modo, es supervivencia. Y he sobrevivido de nuevo. Estoy vivo. Los rumores de mi muerte son muy exagerados, como dijo alguien una vez, Valo sonríe.
Un amigo ayuda a un llanero solitario
Aún así, Valo no estaba solo. El álbum fue mezclado por el productor-mezclador británico Tim Palmer, ya conocido por sus conexiones con HIM, cuyo extenso currículum incluye trabajar con, entre otros, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant y Porcupine Tree.
Sin embargo, la forma habitual de trabajar de Valo y Palmer no era la más convencional. La base del modelo se creó al comienzo del proyecto, en el otoño de 2019, cuando Valo comenzó a delinear el material que finalmente se convirtió en Neon Noir.
- La primera canción que hice fue Run Away from the Sun. Cuando comenzó a progresar en mis propias sesiones, envié versiones de trabajo a Tim y le pregunté si quería unirse a ese proyecto.
- En el mismo contexto, pensé que podría haber algo más en Run Away from the Sun - guitarras adicionales o algo más. Tim ayudó con esas cosas. Si realmente estaba atascado con una canción, podía pedirle consejos y sugerencias.
Palmer, quien participó por primera vez como mezclador en el álbum Love Metal de HIM (2003), se ha convertido en la persona de confianza de Valo en el trabajo creativo a lo largo de los años.
- Tim es ante todo un amigo, pero también entiende mi arte desesperado entre diferentes géneros y estados emocionales. Que tiene que haber una guitarra distorsionada, pero tiene que ser genial. Debe estar oscuro, pero también debe haber esperanza. Tim entiende todo esto muy bien, ilustra Valo.
Desde Run Away from the Sun, el proyecto avanzó una canción a la vez.
- Terminé una canción a la vez, es decir, la escribí y la grabé y luego se la mandé a Tim para que la mezclara. Después de eso, comencé una nueva canción completamente desde cero, dice Valo.

- Tim y yo tuvimos muchas discusiones filosóficas sobre esto. Hay que saber soltar una cosa y entender que ya no mejorará puliendo los detalles. Una sola canción es como una actuación, al hacerla uno se olvida de sí mismo, y cuando está hecho, ya está. Todo lo mejor ya está ahí, no vale la pena agregar más.
Pura experiencia
Cuando el dúo Valo-Palmer completó tres canciones utilizando el método descrito anteriormente: Run Away from the Sun, Salute the Sanguine y Saturnine Saturnalia, surgió la necesidad de presentar sus logros al mundo.
- Ya había fundado el simbólico Heartagram Records después del verano de 2019. La idea del EP Gothica Fennica, que incluía estas tres canciones, era que no quería vender un coche que aún no existe.
- Quería sacar las canciones por mi cuenta y ver si los oyentes están interesados en ellas. Al mismo tiempo vi si las discográficas estaban interesadas y si hay algún encargo para esto. Sin embargo, no hicimos ninguna promoción en los medios en ese momento, solo quería observar la situación desde un lado.
- Escribimos los nombres de las canciones nosotros mismos y subimos las canciones a los servicios de streaming para compartirlas, así que estuve involucrado en el trabajo realmente básico. Fue una experiencia emocionante y por otro lado estresante apretar el botón: "Ahora que están ahí, quién se asegurará, ¿Salió todo bien?", dice Valo.
Por el lado de la compañía discográfica, también hubo interés de compañías internacionales, pero al final, utilizando los términos de Valo, terminaron con una "solución próxima", es decir, Universal y su filial finlandesa Spinefarm.
- La conversación con las compañías discográficas es, por supuesto, del lado comercial, pero también se trata de relaciones personales y con quién hablar, en quién confiar y dónde hay un buen sentimiento. A través de eso, llegamos a esta solución.
Para el propio Valo estaba claro que quería lanzar un disco de larga duración.
- Las compañías discográficas hoy en día hablan mucho de lanzar canciones individuales. Para mí, todo parte de la idea de un LP de vinilo y el hecho de que es la obra de arte general que vamos a hacer. Relacionado con esto, por ejemplo, Love Metal fue un gran problema porque fue el primer disco de HIM que también se lanzó en vinilo. Se sintió como el lanzamiento correcto.
Mientras buscaban una compañía discográfica, Valo y Palmer continuaron creando canciones.
- En algún momento, Tim sugirió que trajera a otros músicos, quienes, por ejemplo, tocarían el violín en algunas canciones o algo similar. Hay ejemplos de estos en todo el mundo, dice Valo.
- Sin embargo, siempre volví a la idea de que no, hacer el disco solo es mucho más limpio. Lo plantas todo desde cero tú solo. Y cuando empezaste a escuchar los frutos de tu trabajo, fue bastante mágico. Nadie había tocado ya las bases de la batería, pero yo mismo había tocado las partes con campanillas en los dedos durante tanto tiempo que logré que salieran bien.
Valo, que comenzó a tocar el bajo a una edad temprana, ya domina los conceptos básicos de la guitarra ("el mismo rasgueo") y la batería ("Toqué un poco en la escuela y tomé algunas lecciones") durante décadas, pero ahora tenía que dominarlos adecuadamente. Sin embargo, Valo no quiere que ningún proceso de aprendizaje individual sea más desafiante que otros.
- Quizás lo más difícil fue encontrar confianza en mi mismo. Siempre es ese tipo de cosas. Al principio, solo hay una sesión de Pro Tools vacía. Ni rastro de una pista, nada. Solo algún patrón de acordes o pieza de melodía hecha en una guitarra acústica. Luego simplemente comienzas a moler hasta que se convierte en algo que suena bien para tu oído y comienzas a construir algo más a su alrededor.
- Es una construcción muy lenta, donde tienes que tener confianza en ti mismo. Ahora, en retrospectiva, es absurdo y surrealista. Se trata de mostrarte. Alguien entrena para un maratón y por lo tanto se supera a sí mismo.
En el momento de la publicación de Gothica Fennica, el mundo comenzó a hundirse en la crisis de la corona. De hecho, gran parte del material de Neon Noir se completó durante la pandemia.
- Tengo que admitir que yo mismo comencé a revolverme un poco. Incluso hace que tu cabeza dé vueltas cuando estás encerrado en una sala de estudio oscura y la finalización de todo el proyecto parece poco realista a veces. Una pequeña tomade oxígeno, y sí, ¡se convierte en alegría otra vez!
En febrero de 2022, estaba listo un álbum de canciones. Después de que se completó el paquete musical completo, la maquinaria de información hacia el mundo exterior finalmente comenzó a despertar. En abril de 2022, se lanzó el sencillo Loveletting, con el que se informó a los fans que el larga duración Neon Noir se lanzaría a principios de 2023. Al pensar en la estructura del lanzamiento, se decidió que las canciones de Gothica Fennica también serían incluidas.
- Lo pensamos un poco, pero siguen siendo parte de la historia general. Me gusta mucho Saturnine Saturnalia, por ejemplo, es una especie de canción más pesada al estilo Black Sabbath. También es bueno tener finalmente las canciones del EP incluidas en el lanzamiento físico, y probablemente no molesten a nadie si se incluyen en el álbum. ¡Todo va al mostrador!
Uno se convierte en muchos
Luego llegó el momento de pensar en cómo se presentaría el material de Neon Noir a las masas sedientas de una experiencia de concierto. La banda no estaba lista y el propio Valo no podía duplicarse para repetir las partes tocadas en el estudio casero.
En septiembre de 2022, en relación con el anuncio sobre el lanzamiento de Neon Noir, se dijo que la formación de conciertos de VV está formada por los músicos finlandeses Risto Rikala (batería), Sampo Sundström (guitarra), Juho Vehmanen (bajo) y Mikko Virta. (guitarra).
Sería interesante saber cuál fue el criterio más importante a la hora de formar la banda de acompañamiento VV.
- No tenía ni idea, dice Valo con una sonrisa divertida en su rostro.
- En serio. Le pregunté a algunos amigos cómo proceder con este asunto. Estaba buscando consejos prácticos y pedagogía sobre cómo armar una banda. Fundé una la última vez cuando era adolescente y, para ser completamente honesto, no tenía idea de cómo lo había hecho, recuerda Valo.
- Por otro lado, no quería una banda que haya existido siempre, sino un grupo de músicos que también son buena gente en la gira.
Al comienzo del proceso de grabación, Valo jugó con la idea de formar una banda de acompañamiento compuesta por nombres internacionales.
- No se trataba de ningún tipo de nombres, cuya narración habría traspasado necesariamente el umbral de la noticia. En su mayoría amigos de bandas con las que había estado de gira, insinúa Valo.
Sin embargo, la llegada de Corona y las restricciones de viaje congelaron estos planes. Parecía poco probable que Valo hubiera podido practicar con una banda formada por músicos procedentes de distintas partes del mundo. De lo contrario, quería concentrarse en terminar el álbum primero.
- Al final, reunir a la banda de la gira fue sorprendentemente fluido. Me recomendaron sentarme con el batería Risto Rikala. Nos conocimos en el verano de 2021 y les dije que esta es una situación completamente nueva para mí. "Ripa, ¿qué harías?"
Rikala ha sido batería en las bandas de apoyo de Jenni Vartiainen, Kaija Koo y Elastinen, entre otros. Por el lado del rock, tiene experiencia como músico principal en la Ben Granfelt Band, por ejemplo.
- Así que Risto ha tocado con muchos tipos de personas y mucha música diferente. Le dije qué tipo de cosas estaba buscando. Lo más importante, no quería ninguna copia de HIM. El hecho de que hubiera estado buscando exactamente el mismo tipo de personas que ya habían tocado habría sido realmente estúpido.
Valo quería usar el material de Neon Noir como punto de partida para encontrar a los músicos adecuados.
- Por supuesto, músicos de metal hubieran sido un punto fuerte. Sin embargo, siempre me he inclinado por cierta sección que es más indie que HIM, por ejemplo, soy muy fan de Queens of the Stone Age. Creo que el álbum también tiene pequeñas afinaciones de ese tipo, y de alguna manera me pareció correcto pensar en posibles intérpretes a través de eso. Por otro lado, el disco tiene elementos bárbaros y, por ejemplo, un poco de cosas que recuerdan a Duran Duran. Un requerimiento específico fue que la banda se viera como un cruce entre Queens of the Stone Age y Kent en el escenario. Queda por ver si obtuve lo que pedí, especula Valo.
Llama la atención que la banda tiene dos guitarristas, pero ningún teclista.

– Lo mismo con los teclados. Neon Noir tiene cosas para las que dos manos no habrían sido suficientes. Debería haber habido un coro y tres sinanistas. Es más fácil hacerlo con grabaciones. Este también ha sido un proceso de aprendizaje interesante, nunca antes había tocado con partes pregrabadas.
Las tácticas de los dos guitarristas también han sido cuidadosamente consideradas.
- Al principio, HIM también tenía la intención de tener dos guitarristas. Oskari "Oki" Kymäläinen tocó en la banda durante un tiempo en la época del EP 666 Ways to Love: Prologue [1996], recuerda Valo.
- Oki dejó el grupo y los sintetizadores de Antto Melasniemi que venían, parecieron reemplazar muchas cosas con dos guitarras. La dificultad y la alegría de elegir.
En los conciertos de la extensa gira que VVcomenzará en enero, también se escucharán canciones de HIM. Valo tuvo la grata responsabilidad de armar un set que funcionara lo mejor posible.
- Por supuesto pedí ayuda a otros para no olvidarme de nada esencial. HIM tenía, gracias a Dios, una larga historia y muchas canciones, muchas de las cuales eran muy conocidas e incluso estaban en las listas de éxitos.
La relación de mezcla cuantitativa es clara.
- Será un 50-50. Así que el material de HIM y Neon Noir se escucha por igual. Creo que es más claro de esa manera. Al principio pensé que debería haber aún más HIM, pero luego me di cuenta de que esta es mi propia gira, dice Valo.
- Por otro lado, las bandas a veces cometen el error de tocar solo canciones del último álbum durante el comienzo del show y solo algunos éxitos antiguos al final. ¡Es un infierno!
Valo dice que la banda de VV ha estado practicando durante solo una semana y enumera la estructura de la primera parte del conjunto canción por canción. Muestra que lo nuevo y lo antiguo se han rociado en la lista de canciones de manera uniforme.
- Ese tipo de estructura funciona muy bien. También muestra cuán cerca pero, por otro lado, cuán lejos están las diferentes canciones entre sí, en cierto modo, la propia voz del artista.
A medida que Valo continúa catalogando, queda claro que no hay gemas olvidadas de discos u otros oscuros favoritos de las filas profundas de la base de fans.
- No. HIM y yo solíamos pedir sugerencias a algunos fans y tocamos algunas segundas canciones oscuras. Sin embargo, el caso es que un par de personas del público los quieren más que nada y están en espacios orgásmicos, pero los demás están mirando el teléfono o yendo al baño. Sí, el trabajo del artista en concierto también es una profesión de servicio en cierto modo.
Aún así, no hay necesidad de centrarse únicamente en los éxitos más obvios que HIM ha tenido desde el éxito bancario de 2000 Join Me in Death.
- HIM se fue hace cinco años y es posible que su larga historia ya esté un poco olvidada. Es bueno recordar en el concierto que, oh sí, hubo canciones como esta y tocan una selección del primer álbum.
La discusión sobre la dificultad de compilar una lista de canciones "correcta" para bandas establecidas desde hace mucho tiempo está comenzando a extenderse. Vamos a hablar de KISS, que ha sido la banda favorita de Valo desde la infancia.
- KISS es un poco como Iron Maiden, tienen completamente su propio estilo de vida. En cierto modo, KISS tiene muchas carreras diferentes y todos tienen sus propios favoritos que deben escucharse. Para algunos fans de hc I Was Made for Loving You ni siquiera es de KISS y ama Creatures of the Night. Before delving into the VV project we have to talk about Valo's previous band, active in the years 1995 - 2017 and called HIM. The most compelling need to deal with the matter arises from the artistic starting point.
Neon Noir is a complete, infectious work of its own, but there's no mistaking who made it. The album is recognizable by its "Ville Valo" sound which makes it easy for the listener to keep track of HIM's production.
So why do we listen to music created under the VV name? Couldn't HIM have done all this?
Valo, sitting in a hotel lobby in Helsinki, doesn't touch on the question, but he reminds us that making music is about more than the end result. The relationship between the musicians and the surrounding conditions has a lot of influence. For example, being in a band should be fun and fruitful.
- At some point, all the members got tired of doing it. It wasn't really more dramatic, Valo explains.

Valo reminds us of the starting points of HIM.
- We, the real founders of the band, me, Linde [Mikko Lindström, guitarist] and Mige [Mikko Paananen, bassist] were childhood friends who met when we were 12-13 years old, discovered Black Sabbath together and learned to play together. It wasn't like when some older guys sit in a bar and decide to start a band. It was an intense relationship that lasted about 25 years. We grew up with HIM, emphasizes Valo.
- It may not have been said everything that needs to be said, but at least this is the situation at the moment.
A reason to live
After HIM's farewell tour in 2017, Valo's next most visible result was a collaboration with the legendary Agents. The seeds of the project had already been sown in 1999 in the music program Laulava Sydän presented by Agents. This time, the fruit of the collaboration was the album Ville Valo & Agents released in February 2019 and the well-received festival tour that followed in the summer.
This is how we got to the initial thoughts of the VV phase.
- I wanted to keep moving. However, he had no desire to start building a new band after all that HIM family period.
- I have always been interested in recording and a bit of everything related to making a record. In a way it was natural and safe to try to see if I could do everything completely independently.
It's worth noting that Valo composed, wrote, recorded, performed, and sang Neon Noir by himself in his home studio, which he built after HIM.
- Of course, I have been making a lot of records, but this was a completely new situation. There are plenty of new tricks for an old dog in hitting the record button yourself or checking that all the pieces are in the right places and everything works.
Every home recordist and laptop-using musician knows that with the help of today's various studio programs, you can make music yourself and remotely make it sound like a complete rock band. It is another thing, however, for the end result to meet all possible professional-level requirements, let alone artistic expectations.
- The most interesting thing was the creation of musical worlds. I made that record to prove to myself that I could do it. And on top of that, the album contains songs that resonate with my own mood. It was like a rite of passage.
- By making these songs and a whole album, I give myself an excuse to exist. It may be going too high to say that making music is my job in the world, but in any case, I have left my mark here. Neon Noir is yet another mainstay to bookmark that. The song remains.
- In a way, it's survival. And I have survived again. I am alive. The rumors of my death are greatly exaggerated, as someone once said, Valo smiles.
A friend helps a lone ranger
Still, Valo was not alone. The album was mixed by British producer-mixer Tim Palmer, already known for his HIM connections, whose extensive resume includes working with, among others, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, Robert Plant and Porcupine Tree.
However, the usual way of working for Valo and Palmer was not the most conventional. The base of the model was created at the beginning of the project, in the fall of 2019, when Valo began outlining the material that would ultimately become Neon Noir.
- The first song I did was Run Away from the Sun. As my own sessions started to progress, I sent working versions to Tim and asked if he wanted to join that project.
- In the same context, I thought there might be something else on Run Away from the Sun - additional guitars or something else. Tim helped with those things. If he was really stuck with a song, I could ask him for tips and advice.
Palmer, who first participated as a mixer on HIM's Love Metal album (2003), has become Valo's go-to for creative work over the years.
-Tim is first and foremost a friend, but he also understands my desperate art between different genres and emotional states. That there has to be a distorted guitar, but it has to be great. It must be dark, but there must also be hope. Tim understands all this very well, Valo illustrates.
Since Run Away from the Sun, the project has moved forward one song at a time.
- I finished one song at a time, that is, I wrote it and recorded it and then sent it to Tim to mix it. After that, I started a new song completely from scratch, Valo says.
So before starting the project, Valo didn't have, say, ten songs ready that he would have started working on. Musically, it was born piece by piece, and the pieces are only picked up once they are ready.
- Tim and I had a lot of philosophical discussions about this. You have to know how to let go of something and understand that it will no longer improve by polishing the details. A single song is like a performance, when you do it you forget about yourself, and when it's done, that's it. All the best is already there, it is not worth adding more.
Pure experience
When the Valo-Palmer duo completed three songs using the method described above: Run Away from the Sun, Salute the Sanguine, and Saturnine Saturnalia, the need arose to present their achievements to the world.
- I had already founded the symbolic Heartagram Records after the summer of 2019. The idea of the EP Gothica Fennica, which included these three songs, was that I didn't want to sell a car that doesn't exist yet.
- I wanted to put the songs out on my own and see if the listeners are interested in them. At the same time I saw if the record companies were interested and if there is any commission for this. However, we didn't do any media promotion at that time, I just wanted to observe the situation from the side.
- We wrote the song names ourselves and uploaded the songs to streaming services for sharing, so I was involved in the really basic work. It was an exciting experience and on the other hand stressful to press the button: "Now that they are there, who will make sure, did everything go well?" says Valo.
On the record company side, there was also interest from international companies, but in the end, to use Valo's terms, they ended up with a "closest solution", namely Universal and its Finnish subsidiary Spinefarm.
- The conversation with record companies is of course on the business side, but it is also about personal relationships and who to talk to, who to trust and where there is a good feeling. Through that, we came to this solution.
It was clear to Valo himself that he wanted to release a full-length album.
- Record companies nowadays talk a lot about releasing individual songs. For me, it's all part of the idea of a vinyl LP and the fact that it's the overall piece of art that we're going to do. Related to this, for example, Love Metal was a big deal because it was the first HIM record to also be released on vinyl. It felt like the right pitch.
While searching for a record company, Valo and Palmer continued to create songs.
-At some point, Tim suggested that he bring other musicians, who, for example, would play the violin in some songs or something similar. There are examples of these all over the world, Valo says.
- However, I always came back to the idea that no, making the album alone is much cleaner. You plant everything from scratch by yourself. And when you started hearing the fruits of your labor, it was pretty magical. Nobody had played the basics of the drums yet, but I had played the parts with finger bells myself for so long that I managed to get them right.
Valo, who started playing bass at a young age, has mastered the basics of guitar ("same strumming") and drums ("I played a little bit in school and took a few lessons") for decades, but now he had to master them properly. However, Valo does not want any individual learning process to be more challenging than others.
- Perhaps the most difficult thing was to find confidence in myself. It's always that kind of thing. At first, there is just an empty Pro Tools session. Not a trace of a clue, nothing. Just some chord pattern or piece of melody done on an acoustic guitar. Then you just start grinding until it becomes something that sounds good to your ear and you start building something else around it.
- It is a very slow construction, where you have to have confidence in yourself. Now, in retrospect, it's absurd and surreal. It's about showing you. Someone trains for a marathon and therefore surpasses himself.
At the time of the publication of Gothica Fennica, the world began to plunge into the corona crisis. In fact, much of the Neon Noir material was completed during the pandemic.
- I have to admit that I began to stir a bit myself. It even makes your head spin when you are locked in a dark study room and the completion of the entire project seems unrealistic at times. A little oxygen intake, and yes, it becomes joy again!
In February 2022, an album of songs was ready. After the entire musical package was completed, the information machinery towards the outside world finally began to wake up. In April 2022, the single Loveletting was released, informing fans that the full-length Neon Noir would be released in early 2023. When thinking about the structure of the release, it was decided that the songs from Gothica Fennica would also be released. included.
- We thought about it a bit, but they are still part of the overall story. I really like Saturnine Saturnalia for example, it's kind of a heavier song in the Black Sabbath style. It's also nice to finally have the songs from the EP included on the physical release, and they probably won't bother anyone if they're included on the album. It all goes to the counter!
One becomes many
Then it was time to think about how the Neon Noir material would be presented to the masses thirsty for a concert experience. The band was not ready, and Valo himself could not duplicate himself to repeat the parts played in the home studio.
In September 2022, in connection with the announcement about the release of Neon Noir, it was said that VV's concert lineup consists of Finnish musicians Risto Rikala (drums), Sampo Sundström (guitar), Juho Vehmanen (bass) and Mikko Virta. (guitar).
It would be interesting to know what was the most important criteria when forming the VV backing band.
I had no idea, Valo says with an amused smile on his face.
- Oh really. I asked some friends how to proceed with this matter. I was looking for practical advice and pedagogy on how to put together a band. I last founded one as a teenager, and to be completely honest, I had no idea how I did it, Valo recalls.
- On the other hand, I didn't want a band that has been around forever, but a group of musicians who are also good people on tour.
Early in the recording process, Valo toyed with the idea of forming a backing band made up of international names.
- It was not about any kind of names, the narration of which would necessarily have crossed the threshold of news. Mostly friends from bands he'd toured with, Valo hints.
However, the arrival of Corona and travel restrictions put these plans on hold. It seemed unlikely that Valo would have been able to practice with a band made up of musicians from different parts of the world. Otherwise, he wanted to focus on finishing the album first.
- In the end, getting the band together for the tour went surprisingly smoothly. They recommended me to sit with the drummer Risto Rikala. We met in the summer of 2021 and I told them that this is a completely new situation for me. "Ripa, what would you do?"
Rikala has been a drummer in the backing bands of Jenni Vartiainen, Kaija Koo, and Elastinen, among others. On the rock side, he has experience as a lead musician in the Ben Granfelt Band, for example.
- So Risto has played with many types of people and many different music. I told him what kind of things he was looking for. Most importantly, he didn't want any copies of HIM. The fact that he had been looking for the exact same type of people who had already played would have been really stupid.
Valo wanted to use the Neon Noir material as a starting point to find the right musicians.
- Of course, metal musicians would have been a strong point. However, I have always leaned towards a certain section that is more indie than HIM, for example, I am a big fan of Queens of the Stone Age. I think the album has little tunings of that kind as well, and it kind of felt right to me to think of possible performers through that. On the other hand, the album has barbaric elements and, for example, a bit of stuff reminiscent of Duran Duran. One specific requirement was that the band look like a cross between Queens of the Stone Age and Kent on stage. Whether I got what I asked for remains to be seen, Valo speculates.
He calls attention to the fact that the band has two guitarists, but no keyboardist.
- That was the intention from the beginning. The keyboards come from a recording, as do certain backing vocals. Now, for the first time, I can hit all those great HIM background chords, which are, for example, in songs like The Funeral of Hearts.
- So, even after making the record, I've sung the choruses of all HIM's songs in my home studio. Mige and Burton [Janne Puurtinen, keyboardist] always sang it live at HIM, but it sounds small when two people sing it. With the help of backing tapes, some songs are a couple of steps closer to the disc versions.
– Same with keyboards. Neon Noir has things that two hands wouldn't have been enough for. There should have been a choir and three sinanistas. It's easier to do with recordings. This has also been an interesting learning process, I have never played with pre-recorded parts before.
The tactics of the two guitarists have also been carefully considered.
- At first, HIM also intended to have two guitarists. Oskari "Oki" Kymäläinen played in the band for a while around the time of the 666 Ways to Love: Prologue [1996] EP, Valo recalls.
- Oki left the band and Antto Melasniemi's synths that were coming, seemed to replace a lot of things with two guitars. However, I love, for example, the great walls of guitars from The Smashing Pumpkins or, on the other hand, the Allman Brothers Band, where various guitars do different things from each other.
- Now we can better implement things that, for example, Linde could not do alone. A guitar pulls, or example, of the rhythmic base and the other of more beautiful chords. This made it possible to make a conscious separation from HIM. Comparisons with HIM will also happen automatically. So it's better to have done it in a clearly different way.
The difficulty and joy of choosing.
In the concerts of the extensive tour that VV will start in January, HIM songs will also be heard. Valo had the great responsibility of putting together a set that worked as well as possible.
- Of course I asked others for help so as not to forget anything essential. HIM had, thank God, a long history and many songs, many of which were very well known and even charted.
The quantitative mixing ratio is clear.
- It'll be 50-50. So the HIM and Neon Noir stuff is heard equally. I think it's clearer that way. At first I thought there should be even more HIM, but then I realized that this is my own tour, says Valo.
- On the other hand, bands sometimes make the mistake of playing only songs from the latest album during the beginning of the show and only some old hits at the end. It's a hell!
Valo says that VV's band has been practicing for only a week and lists the structure of the first part of the set song by song. He shows that new and old have been sprinkled across the set list evenly.
- That kind of structure works very well. It also shows how close but on the other hand how far the different songs are from each other, in a way, the artist's own voice.
As Valo continues to catalogue, it becomes clear that there are no forgotten gems of records or other obscure favorites from the deep ranks of the fanbase.
- No. HIM and I used to ask some fans for suggestions and we played some obscure second songs. However, the fact is that a couple of people in the audience love them more than anything and they are in orgasmic spaces, but the others are looking at the phone or going to the bathroom. Yes, the work of the concert artist is also a profession of service in a way.
Still, there's no need to focus solely on the more obvious hits HIM has had since 2000's bankruptcy Join Me in Death.
- HIM left five years ago and its long history may already be a bit forgotten. It's nice to remember at the concert that, oh yeah, there were songs like this and they play a selection from the first album.
The discussion about the difficulty of compiling a "correct" set list for long-established bands is beginning to spread. Let's talk about KISS, which has been Valo's favorite band since childhood.
- KISS is a bit like Iron Maiden, they have their own lifestyle completely. In a way, KISS has many different careers and everyone has their own must-listen favourites. For some hc fans I Was Made for Loving You isn't even from KISS and loves Creatures of the Night. The most important one for me is Animalize. But maybe KISS will still have their own chapter in this regard!
