Todo es igual que antes: Ville Valo, vestido de negro, está aquí de nuevo. – Creo que estoy volviendo (en la letra del nuevo álbum) a las preguntas básicas, al sentimiento de ser un extraño y pensar que esto no tiene sentido. Creo que esto se debe a la pandemia. Cuando tuve que bajar el ritmo por la pandemia, el movimiento alrededor desapareció, tuve que enfrentar sentimientos iniciales. Es interesante, pero a veces francamente horrible. Y cómo esos sentimientos siguen siendo los mismos que cuando era joven. No han cambiado de forma.
- Las canciones celebran el aprendizaje por las malas. El hecho de que haya nubes oscuras en la vida es por una razón: ahora estamos aprendiendo algo.
Los fans de HIM han estado esperando cinco años para el regreso de Ville Valo. El 31 de diciembre de 2017, HIM terminó con un concierto en Tavastia en Helsinki.
Dice que ha estado trabajando "todo el tiempo" en el disco que saldrá ahora, porque todo lo ha hecho él mismo al "estilo Prince": ha escrito las canciones y, por supuesto, las canta, pero Valo también tocó todos los instrumentos del álbum él mismo y grabó su interpretación. En el sótano de su casa, tenía un kit de batería Kumu constantemente monitorizado, para poder hacer cambios en las grabaciones mientras aún estaba en la etapa de mezcla.

La pandemia de corona con sus restricciones golpeó la vida de Valo fuertemente. Cuando la gente no salía de sus casas de todos modos, se divertía en su estudio del sótano.
- Obedecí las restricciones de corona estrictamente. Pero a principios de 2021, comencé a tener el ceño fruncido cuando se cancelaron los eventos por segundo verano consecutivo. ¿Esto nunca terminará? Valo recuerda.
- La incertidumbre provocada por la pandemia hizo que tomara las cosas de un modo más zen. Hay cosas en las que puedes cambiar y cosas que no. Decidí centrarme en hacer discos, podía influir en eso. Personalmente, quizás lo más importante de las restricciones de corona fue que no vi a mis padres durante un par de Navidades. Aparte de eso, mi vida no fue nada bien. No soy una persona muy social. Hacer música es algo solitario de todos modos. Y lo hice lo mejor que pude.
– Felicitaciones a los adolescentes por sobrevivir a esa época: rebobinando, ¿cómo habría sido tener 15 años cuando llegaron las restricciones? Y para las familias, donde los padres trabajaban desde casa y los niños estaban en la escuela a distancia, en casa todo el tiempo. Debe haber sido difícil. Yo pude retirarme a la soledad sublime para hacer música. ¡Fue realmente genial!
Ahora que la nueva música está lista y se han eliminado las restricciones, Valo está listo para la vida de gira.
- Tengo muchas ganas de viajar. En el otoño, me fui de viaje por primera vez en años, a Berlín y Londres. Fue toda una experiencia ir de repente al renovado Helsinki-Vantaa. De repente estaba en medio de un trillón de personas: ¡oh, sí, esto es vida!

Primero por él mismo y más aún porque tiene un niño y una familia, los padres también son buena gente. Hay gente alrededor que se preocupa por él. Lo vi por última vez hace cinco años en la última gira de HIM. Fue una reunión rápida y él estaba muy centrado entonces.
Bam Margera no es el único que ha sufrido problemas de abuso de sustancias. El propio Ville Valo le dijo a IS en 2007 que pasó por rehabilitación por abuso de sustancias. La primera década de la banda HIM había quedado atrás. Sube a la cima primero en Finlandia, luego sensacionalmente número uno en Alemania con la canción "Join Me (In Death), realiza giras por todo el mundo y, entre otras cosas, construye una sólida base de fans en los Estados Unidos a través de giras largas.

En la rutina de conciertos de Ville, todo cambió hace 15 años de un solo golpe.
- Probablemente he hecho (en toda mi carrera) más conciertos sobrio que borrracho, dice.
– La competencia es tan feroz que no hay posibilidad de bailar si quieres que vaya bien. Para mi cantar es más especial que servirme cerveza. Convierto las curvas en lineas rectas.
Incluso la marca registrada del joven HIM-Ville, es decir, fumar, se mantuvo.
- No he fumado en años. Afecta a mi canto, mi consumo de oxígeno es mejor y puedo cantar notas más largas sin quedarme sin aliento. Además de poder subir las escaleras sin fatigarme, como si tuviera un tercio de mis pulmones. Hay una gran diferencia.

The corona pandemic greatly affected the making of Ville Valo's album. The songs he wrote for the band HIM have been divided into two depending on whether they talk about a breakup or a crush, but fittingly for his first solo album, VV has now plunged into introspection.
– People often think that records are journal entries from a certain moment. However, the stories behind the songs are more complex and abstract, Valo says.
– I think I'm going back (in the lyrics of the new album) to the basic questions, to the feeling of being an outsider and thinking that this doesn't make sense. I think this is due to the pandemic. When I had to slow down because of the pandemic, the movement around disappeared, I had to face initial feelings. It's interesting, but sometimes downright awful. And how those feelings are still the same as when I was young. They have not changed shape.
- Songs celebrate learning the hard way. The fact that there are dark clouds in life is for a reason: now we are learning something.
HIM fans have been waiting five years for Ville Valo's comeback. On December 31, 2017, HIM ended with a concert at Tavastia in Helsinki.
He says he's been working "all the time" on the record that's coming out now, because he's done it all himself "Prince style": he's written the songs and, of course, he sings them, but Valo also played all the instruments on the band. album himself and recorded his performance. In the basement of his house, he kept a Kumu drum kit constantly monitored, so he could make changes to the recordings while still in the mixing stage.
So, the public has been waiting to see Valo live, but has he been waiting to get to the concerts himself? Or is acting for Ville Valo, who considers himself shy, the more repulsive side of the rock star image? Would he want to make new music all the time like Prince?
- Yes, in my opinion, I have to come out of my hiding place. It's not healthy to be in the basement all the time. Esa (Pulliainen) called my studio Hiilikellari (coal cellar): "Oh, the Hiilikellari mörkö is back" (the monster from the coal cellar is back), says Valo.
- I've been in the studio long enough now. It's been good to be out of the public eye for a while, when there's been nothing major going on.
The corona pandemic with its restrictions hit Valo's life hard. When people didn't come out of his house anyway, he amused himself in his basement studio.
- I obeyed corona restrictions strictly. But in early 2021, I began to frown when events were canceled for the second summer in a row. This will never end? Valo remember.
-The uncertainty caused by the pandemic made him take things in a more zen way. There are things you can change and things you can't. I decided to focus on making records, I could influence that. Personally, perhaps the biggest thing about the corona restrictions was that I didn't see my parents for a couple of Christmas. Other than that, my life was not good at all. I am not a very social person. Making music is a lonely thing anyway. And I did the best I could.
– Kudos to the teens for surviving that era: rewinding, what would it have been like to be 15 when the restrictions hit? And for families, where parents worked from home and children were at school remotely, at home all the time. It must have been difficult. I was able to retire to sublime solitude to make music. It was really cool!
Now that the new music is out and the restrictions have been lifted, Valo is ready for life on the road.
- I really want to travel. In the fall, I went on a trip for the first time in years, to Berlin and London. It was quite an experience to suddenly go to the renewed Helsinki-Vantaa. Suddenly I was in the middle of a zillion people: oh yes, that's life!
Ville Valo has certainly been exposed even without his own contribution. American television star and skateboarder Bam Margera has blamed her old friend Valo for his drug problem that derailed his life. Young celebrities partied a lot together in the early 2000s.
– I'm sorry if heis not well. We were very close. We hung out a lot together, both with the band and otherwise. Both in the good and in the bad, Valo remembers.
– Bam had recordings and stuff all the time. They were both on the rise, there was a lot of good energy, but of course you cannot see the inside.
"But these recent things... it's not him who's talking." I don't know if he is the genie in the bottle or someone else. All I can say is that I hope he gets better. First for himself and even more because he has a child and a family, the parents are also good people. There are people around who care about him. I last saw him five years ago on HIM's last tour. It was a quick meeting and he was very focused then.
Bam Margera isn't the only one who has suffered from substance abuse issues. Ville Valo himself told IS in 2007 that he went through rehabilitation for substance abuse. The first decade of the band HIM was behind them. He climbs to the top first in Finland, then sensationally number one in Germany with the song "Join Me (In Death), tours all over the world and, among other things, builds a strong fan base in the United States through long tours.
But the almost uninterrupted work and the traditionally typical parties of rock life take their toll. I had to stop, and I did through cutting therapy. Now Ville Valo thanks Seppo Vesterinen, the late manager of the band HIM, for directing the singer to treatment at his own request.
– After finishing Venus Doom (HIM's sixth album, 2007), I ran out of energy. I told Seppo: "Help me somehow. What do I have to do?" I always remember what Seppo replied: "Nothing here. It happens even in the best families." That was well said. Because it is so. And you can't see for yourself when feeling bad is at the center of it all.
In Ville's concert routine, everything changed 15 years ago in one fell swoop.
-Probably I have done (in my entire career) more concerts sober than drunk, he says.
– The competition is so fierce that there is no possibility of dancing if you want it to go well. For me singing is more special than serving me beer. I turn curves into straight lines.
Even the trademark of the young HIM-Ville, i.e. smoking, stuck.
- I haven't smoked in years. It affects my singing, my oxygen consumption is better and I can sing longer notes without getting out of breath. In addition to being able to climb the stairs without fatigue, as if I had a third of my lungs. There is a big difference.
Does Ville Valo regret the way he burned the candle at both ends in his youth? A familiar mischievous smile appears on his face as he says:
“It wouldn't change much after all. Without those lessons, I wouldn't be here. Sometimes you have to go the hard way.
